Ferguson Publishes Book on African American Philosophy

Bloomsbury Academic has recently published a ground-breaking book on African American Philosophers and Philosophy: An Introduction to the History, Concepts, and Contemporary Issues by Stephen C. Ferguson II, associate professor of philosophy at NC State, and John H. McClendon III, professor of philosophy at Michigan State University.

In this book, Ferguson and McClendon introduce ideas of African American thinkers and academic philosophers and for the first time offer a broad-ranging overview of the history of the Black experience in American philosophy. They discuss African American contributions to aesthetics, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion and metaphilosophy (the philosophy of philosophy). The book also contains a number of useful supplementary resources, including a chronological list of African American scholars who earned doctorates in philosophy between 1865 and 1999, along with their institutions and dissertation titles.

Stephen Ferguson, who recently served as Coordinator of NC State’s Africana Studies Program, teaches courses in both Philosophy and Africana Studies. He is the author of Philosophy of African American Studies: Nothing Left of Blackness (Palgrave, 2015) and a co-author (with John McClendon) of Beyond The White Shadow: Philosophy, Sports and the African American Experience (Kendall-Hunt, 2012). He has also co-edited two books and published a number of articles in books and journals.
