Karey Harwood Named Associate Head
Karey Harwood, associate professor of Religious Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS), has been appointed as associate head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NC State. She assumes her new role on July 1, 2024.
Harwood joined NC State in 2003 after earning her Ph.D. from the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University.
Harwood’s scholarship focuses on feminist analyses of reproductive and genetic technologies and moral arguments surrounding public school integration. Her newest book, Wake: Why the Battle Over Diverse Public Schools Still Matters, was published by Rutgers University Press in May 2024. Her first book, The Infertility Treadmill: Feminist Ethics, Personal Choice and the Use of Reproductive Technologies, was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2007. She has also published numerous articles and book chapters on topics in feminist bioethics.
A gifted teacher, Harwood received an Outstanding Teacher Award in 2010 and an Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award in 2019. With the former she was inducted into the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
During her more than twenty years at NC State, Harwood has served in various administrative roles, including coordinator of the WGS program, director of the interdisciplinary studies major, and director of the health, medicine, and human values minor. She has also served on a wide range of committees and currently serves as a Park faculty scholar for the Class of 2026.
The responsibilities of the associate head include serving as director of undergraduate programs and as the department’s representative on the college undergraduate programs committee; departmental oversight of and responsibility for general academic matters, assessment, and course and curriculum actions; general advice and assistance to the department head; and standing in for the head when necessary.
